Zhen Yan, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Pharmacology and Molecular Physiology & Biological Physics at University of Virginia and also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tianjin University of Sport (China). He is a Member of American Heart Association (AHA), The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (CADA), Chinese American Diabetes Association (SCWD), The American Diabetes Association (ADA), and The American Physiological Society (APS).

He has author or coauthor more than 100 peer-reviewed publications with 12011 citations and h-index of 49 (Google Scholar). As a highly cited investigator in the science of medicine and molecular physiology, he has over 25 years’ experience in employing the state-of-the-art molecular and imaging technologies in a variety of animal models to elucidate the underlying molecular and signaling mechanisms of exercise training-induced adaptations and their impacts on health and disease(i.e. diabetes, heart failure, mitochondrial disease and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, etc.). He always dedicates to translating these findings to human, and provides scientific evidence for development of interventions to promote population and individual health and wellbeing. His prestigious contribution to science include: (1) elucidated exercise-induced mitophagy in skeletal muscle and its role in contractile and metabolic adaptations; (2) revealed the role of p38 MAPK in control of PGC-1a in exercise-induced skeletal muscle adaptation; (3) revealed the role of p38 MAPK in control of PGC-1a in exercise-induced skeletal muscle adaptation;(4) revealed muscle-derived extracellular superoxide dismutase (ECSOD) in exercise benefits.
